We explored a new section of the Northern Maderia coastline to discover a couple of amazing spots that provide opportunities to get into gorgeous volcanic natural pools. A bucket list thing to do while here on the island. En route we found several other cool things to do and a scenic way home.
We headed up through a mountain pass and came out into Sao Vicente. Then we turned west to reach our first stop.
Seixal
This is a small little pretty village. We stopped at a small little snack bar to enjoy these views with our coffee.
Then we made our way down to see the free natural pools. On this day they were closed to swimming because the waves were way too big which made it really quiet and fun to enjoy. It's a beautiful area to just sit and enjoy watching the water and views so we still had a great time.
Cool Rock Formations
Then we continued on stopping to enjoy the big waves and interesting rocks at Miradouro da Robeira da Janela.
We climbed higher and through tunnels as we made our way along the coastline past vineyards, gardens and towns and around closed roads due to rock slides.
Porto Moniz
After reaching the far Northwestern part of the island, we were surprised to see one of the pools was open! This one was raised and more protected from the gigantic waves crashing all around so of course I had to get in! It's free but they don't have a changing room so I found a bathroom in the café that's right next to the pools. The water was brisk at first but felt so good and it was amazing to be swimming in this gorgeous natural setting.
A Country Bakery
The road continued to climb above Porto Moniz as we headed back into the mountains to take a different route back home. We stopped at an incredible local bakery Rodripan, that was connected to a home on the end of a little street, to grab a few goodies.
Driving ER110
This mountain road took us through areas that were completely different than any other we had driven on. Much greener, had cows and unique vegetation. It was fun to see a totally different looking area on the island.
As we came back into Funchal the sky was so pretty as the sun was getting close to setting.
November 2022
Wow! You guys really picked a lovely spot to winter! This morning it was 12 degrees when I went out at 8 am to start chores. It warmed up some today and tonight it will be in the mid twenties, much better. By tomorrow evening another storm will be upon us, which is good. But I look at your photos and wish I could be there for a day or two. It just looks magical.
Love the picture where you look like a bird. It was only a matter of time I guess haha
