All things ducks

Did you know Texas is a great place to see all sorts of ducks? Some of them are native here, but many others pass through during migration or stay for the winter.

Male Wood Duck

I've been able to photograph 4 of the 10 TX native duck species so far: Wood, Moscovy, Northern Shoveler and Mallard.

Some of the others ducks I've seen I'm not sure how to identify as they aren't showing up in my research!

The Moscovy duck is very interesting and often has red facial skin with odd warty growths. It kind of reminds me of a turkey face. The ones I've seen are quite large and sometimes fairly tame as I had one come sit right by me on the ground as I was taking pictures.

The Northern Shoveler has beautiful colors and an incredible large spoon-shaped bill. The one I saw was a male as the females have an orange bill and mottled brown plummage. He was busy foraging with his bill down in the water.

The Mallard duck is quite large as well, especially the male with its brilliant green head and yellow bill. The females are mottled brown and have orange-and-brown bills.

The Male Wood Duck I have watched a few times, at Mill Pond, is just stunning! As the light catches it differently it really brings out soooo many colors.

Here are the unidentified waterfowl that I'm still trying to figure out.....
