Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon, Portugal

For some of the best views in Lisbon we spent a couple of hours climbing around this historic castle.

According to Wikipedia - "human occupation of the castle hill dates to at least the 8th century BC while the first fortifications built date from the 1st century BC. The hill on which Saint George's Castle stands has played an important part in the history of Lisbon, having served as the location of fortifications occupied successively by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, before its conquest by the Portuguese in the 1147 Siege of Lisbon. Since the 12th century, the castle has variously served as a royal palace, a military barracks, home of the Torre do Tombo National Archive, and now as a national monument and museum." Read that again.....the first fortifications were from the FIRST Century BC! Holy cow! We went first thing in the morning so it was perfect because we could climb around the walls with very few other people for some of the most amazing views as this is the highest hill in Lisbon.

We also discovered some of the current royal inhabitants! They were splendiferous to watch, and capture on the big camera, as I sat on a castle wall.

Absolutely stunning. Love love love seeing the city through those arched windows. It's almost incomprehensible how old that place is. 😳 I also always forget that peacocks like to sit and sleep in trees! It just seems so weird?? 😂
