Golden Hour on South Padre Island

A beautiful time on the island.

This is my most favorite time of the day as the sun starts to get lower, the colors get vibrant, wildlife gets active and everything just looks beautiful bathed in that light. Loved plopping down in the sand and watching.....and using my camera.

This time of day at PSI is really cool since everything is super active.

This stunning Green Heron caught his dinner and gulped it down whole!

Watching all the wildlife, as the sun sets, is just magical from these boardwalks.

We watched this Great Egret as it caught a pretty big fish. It then repeatedly dipped it into the water. I believe they do this to subdue the fish and get it turned the way they want in their bill in order to swallow it. It may also make it easier to swallow to have it wet since the whole thing goes down at once! No chewing at all. Jordan captured the moment with this great video.

I never get tired of watching Great Blue Herons and in this light their colors just really look incredible.

I also spotted a Least Bittern which is a small heron. It was motionless on the bank as it hunted and I'm glad I noticed it because it really blended in with the surrounding colors!

Another cool bird I saw one evening was a Red-winged Blackbird. It was really fluffing up it's feathers and making lots of noise trying to get noticed. It was really cool watching those bright feathers come out when he wanted to show off.

In this lighting I was able to really capture some gorgeous images of a Pied-billed Grebe. When it opened up its mouth.....WOW!

We loved watching the Pelicans adapt their hunting in this shallow water as the sun set.
