Puig de Maria is a 3.2 mile hike near Pollença and for a steady climb up (649 feet) offers really incredible views. There is a monastery at the top with a church that was constructed in 1348. The day we did this it was closed so we couldn't access anything inside, but it was wonderful to walk all around the perimeter and take in the panoramic views overlooking the city and countryside.
The Trail
Be aware that a similar hike on AllTrails that showed we could start farther up the mountain, but that road was only open to local residents. We passed homes, small farms and animals as we made our way up the hill and it got greener the higher we went.
Then the trail got steeper and very rocky and we got peeks of the surrounding farms. Some of them were burning things which made it quite smoky in areas.
Exploring around the Monastery
After reaching the monastery, which was built twelve years after the church, we walked all around and peered out over the stone walls. We had heard there was a restaurant up here but it wasn't open when we were there in December. Being at the top of the hill offered wonderful views and we loved the architecture.
Amazing Views
We climbed around, bypassed a few goats, and discovered a beautiful view of Cap de Formentor and the Bay of Alcúdia as well as some ruins of an old tower.
Veering off a little
We began descending back down on a different trail for the first bit that took us along the perimeter past more goats (one with an adorable little one that was resting) and had fantastic views of Pollença before meeting back up with our original trail to continue to the bottom.
December 2022
The view of the town from up so high is AMAZING. Love those goats, too!!
