Our cute apartment is in the Graca neighborhood which is one of the older areas here and on the highest hill in Lisbon. Here's our our initial exploring and discoveries.
Here is a view from the bedroom window. It's hard to tell how steep this street is from this angle but it gets your heart pumping for sure when walking. Our building is part way down from the highest point.
Here's another view from standing at the top of street looking down. It's a one way for cars which is good because it's quite narrow!
After unloading our things we headed out walking all around to get a feel for our area and grab lunch. This is not one of the busier tourist neighborhoods, unless you are near the most well known overlooks, and has much more of a local feel. The streets are very narrow and with cars and trams going by, tuk tuk's hauling people up the hills and people walking you have to pay attention to what you're doing. Sometimes the sidewalk is only about 18" wide and you've got people walking both directions and all that activity right next to you on the road! We loved wandering our first day and taking it all. And the views! As the evening came on the colors really changed and it was just lovely.
The next day I started out in the morning and walked miles and miles up/down narrow cobblestone streets and climbed a ton of stairs and hills as I exploring all over Graca. I spent the entire day finding cool street art (including two done by Shepard Fairey, creator of Barack Obama’s famous portrait, “Obama Hope”) and stopped whenever I ran into something that looked interesting like the courtyard & tile of the Convento da Graca (one of the oldest in Lisbon - founded in 1271) which is next to the Miradouro da Graca. I enjoyed finding little patios to sit on and people watch and ended up sitting with my book in a wonderful little wine bar for quite a while where I ate dinner.
We can't wait to learn more about the city and it's various neighborhoods and sure love where we are staying.
Looks so stunning. I love that everything is bursting with art and color on those white walls– everything from graffiti to murals to tile work. Oh and that terraced veggie garden looks so cute!! That picture is so gorgeous with the hills and castle in the background. 😍
Looks like a slightly bigger city than Lagos, different, but I am sure you will come to love it too. You certainly do have a room with a view! Can't wait to see more.
