TX Island time

South Padre Island - a barrier island off the southern coast of Texas.

Holidays are over....seemed like a good time to head even further south to do some exploring/playing by the ocean and see the incredible birds that are in this area. We're staying at Isla Blanca Park due to it's good location. The park itself isn't pretty (one row of RV's after another all jammed in - not sure why it's even called a park) but we can walk over to the beach and have a great view in case Space X decides to launch a rocket.

To get on the island you drive across the very long bridge in the background of this picture.

Cool Island Stuff we've discovered so far:

1. On one end of the island are all the restaurants/stores and the other end it's miles of remote sand dunes and hard packed sandy beach that you can drive, bike or walk on.

2. Dolphins! There is a dolphin research center here that offers boat tours but we haven't done that. I saw these guys while out walking on the beach.

3. An amazing variety of birds! Many migrate here for the winter. Here are some pictures I took of Brown Pelicans we saw on a boardwalk. They are everywhere on the island and we love watching them as they glide right above the water. When they are hunting they dive straight down into the water splashing in to catch fish. Cool Info: Adult Brown Pelicans are gray-brown birds with yellow heads and white necks. In breeding plumage, the back and sides of the neck turn a rich, dark reddish-brown. Immatures are gray-brown above (including the head and neck) with pale whitish belly and breast.
