Seeing Pico do Arieiro, Madeira without hiking

One of the most spectacular areas on Madeira, Pico do Ariero is only a 35 minute drive from Funchal. The views are incredible even if you aren't planning to do this fantastic hike which we feel is the best one on the island. It is one of the three highest peaks, all of which are about 6,000 feet, and offers some of the best panoramic vistas in every direction.

Standing near the Café

There are a few different places you can park depending on how crowded it is but they're easily found. Be aware that it can get quite windy and chilly depending on the time of year so bring a wind jacket and layers. They also have a café, gift shop, bathrooms (for 50 cents) and a number of great viewpoints all easily reached within a few minutes walk.

The Astonishing Views!

Here are some images showing what you can see surrounding the Café area and after walking out on the start of the very popular, and challenging, hiking trail that connects to Pico do Ruivo. Just be aware that the further you go out along the trail the more it means you have to climb back up! The amazing views will entice you to just keep going further to the next viewpoint, but make sure you have planned for how much effort it will take to return.

Another Amazing Viewpoint

There is another observation viewpoint that's well worth the short walk from this same area. It's called Miradouro do Juncal and can be found here. From this deck you see out to the water and on a clear day to the São Lourenço peninsula.
